Year 3 Curriculum

Marvellous Maps

We will begin the first part of this half term developing our Geography fieldwork skills through our
Marvellous Maps topic. We will explore what maps are, how they help us and how keys are used.
We will use our new knowledge to create and follow sketch maps and, by looking at maps of
different scales, will investigate land use in Great Britain. There will be lots of opportunities for us to
practise the use of mathematical vocabulary to describe position, direction and movement, as well
as developing our skills to write sets of instructions.
Our learning focus will then turn to the
Ancient Egyptians. This is an extended study and will run
until the end of the summer term. This half term, we will travel back in time to the deserts of
Ancient Egypt to understand the chronology of the period and begin to explore daily life. For our
Super Start, we will delve into the process of mummification, but that is all we are saying for now!
Our English lessons will focus on the text ‘Ma At’s Feather’ by Juliet Desailly. We know some of you
enjoy sharing our class texts at home, but we ask that this one is only read in school as we will be
making predictions as we move through the story. There are lots of other books, both fiction and
non-fiction, that you can read at home such as Horrible Histories.
